No Foolin’

Song of the Day:
Pete Townshend and Ronnie Lane – April Fool

Rough Mix (1977) is one of our very most favorite albums here at Infinite Jones so on April Fool’s Day there was little question about what the Song of the Day was going to be. This Ronnie Lane tune is sad, sweet and heart-breakingly beautiful.  Not a jokey/funny song at all but, for an April Fool’s Day that also falls on Easter Sunday , we thought it was just about right.

Why People Funny?

Song of the Day:
Lee “Scratch” Perry – People Funny Boy

Apparently ‘Scratch’ was mad at  his former producer, Joe Gibbs when he wrote this but, we always felt it could be applied to all the big shots of the world.  People are funny boy but, not in a good way.  But, hey, this early Reggae Classic helped Lee work though his anger issues and it can help us, too.  Thanks Mr. Perry!

TGIF Disco Version

Song of the Friday:

Love and Kisses – Thank God It’s Friday

There are a lot of videos out there that feature either the actual band Love and Kisses or clips from the TGIF movie but, for some reason, they are all very low in both sound and video quality .  So, since someone was nice enough to make this visually and sonically  superior video for the song  featuring clips from an entirely different “Friday” movie we decided to show that instead. The film is Friday Foster which has the big time bonus of starring Pam Grier!  Yaphet Koto and Eartha Kitt also star and show up in the clip.  And, it has the guy who played the bartender on the Love Boat, who is well used in the video.  Anyway, Happy Friday!

(Our thanks to the original poster:  good work guy!)

Too Funky?

Video of the Day:
James Brown – It’s Too Funky in Here

This relatively obscure James Brown song from his 1979 The Original Disco Man album can be read a a kiss off to the Disco sound James might have felt he was forced to embrace to meet the trends of the market.  It’s hilarious (“need some air freshener under the drums”) but, it is also a darn catchy ear worm and an undeniably funky Disco Jam.  A great “walk-off” song, we used it to close out our Famous Funky Friday sets for years.  But, really can it ever be TOO Funky?  We think not.  Decide for yourself.

Oh Mercy!

Song of the Day:
Bob Dylan – Everything Is Broken

Bob Dylan thought everything was broken back in 1989.  He always was ahead of his time!  This is from his Daniel Lanois produced Oh Mercy album.  It is generally considered one of his best albums of the ’80’s, which may be faint praise but, we have always loved this propulsive, still lyrically applicable groover.  Enjoy.

Funky Western Civilization

Song of the Day:
Tonio K. – The funky Western Civilization

“Just because we’re hypnotized, that don’t mean we can’t dance” is Tonio K.‘s arch solution to dealing with the Sick Sad World we (still) live in.  This typically sarcastic and not actually very funky piss take is from TK’s critically acclaimed 1978 debut album, Life in the Food Chain.  Undeniably catchy, it’s mean spirited and kinda funny vibe fits our mood this week.  So, go ahead, get down, get funky, get Western because “there’s a brand new dance craze
sweeping the nation
and it’s called the funky western civilization!”

Dog People

Video of the Day:
The Bottle Rockets – Dog

We are Dog People here at infinite Jones.  So we love this video.  If you have a dog, you will too.
