Steely Dan Remixed

Video of the Day:
Steely Dan – Do It Again (Extended Rework Flying Mojito Bros Done It Again Edit)

We don’t always enjoy these “disco” remixes of Classic Rock songs but, this one is kinda brilliant.  And, a groovy Soul Train Dance Line for your viewing pleasure!

Friday on My Mind

Song of the Friday:
The Easybeats – Friday on My Mind

Australian Band The Easybeats had a worldwide hit in 1967 with the raucous, rave-up Friday on My Mind. It is definitely one of our favorite Friday Anthems.  So Crank It, It’s Friday!

Note: The band’s chief song writing team, George Young and Harry Vanda, went on to form proto-New Wave group Flash and the Pan in the 70’s.  George, of course, is the older brother of Angus and Malcom Young of AC/DC.  (2017 was a sad year for the Young family as both George and Malcom passed away. RIP)

Someone Could Lose a Heart Tonight

Song of the Day:
Sweet Pea Atkinson – Someone Could Lose a Heart Tonight (1982)

This one is SO ’80’sSweet Pea Atkinson is the featured vocalist on what is essentially a Was (Not Was) record and the song is a cover of an Eddie Rabbit hit, heavily synthesized and drum-machined.  Still, the Was Brothers added some tough guitars and funky beats to this and it’s great if you like the type, which we do.  We hope you do too,

Spider Cows!

Video of the Day:
Deadbolt – Swamp Witch

We don’t even know WHAT to say about this!  Sometimes the Internets throw up something weird and ya gotta just roll with it.  And, this is REALLY Weird but, it’s our kind of weird.  We are not even sure if the band, Deadbolt is in anyway connected with this video.  There is nothing particularly Swampy or Witchy about the visuals but, somehow it still works.  We hope you can dig it, too.

A. C. Newman – The Slow Wonder

UNDERRATED Album Hall of Fame:

A. C. Newman – The Slow Wonder (2004)

Our favorite New Pornographers album is actually their leader  A.C. Newman‘s solo debut The Slow Wonder!  It’s one of those rare records that engages immediately from the first notes and continues to reward repeated listens for years to come.  Each concise, catchy song has a hook that sticks.  The singing is warm and engaging (something that is not always the case in the New Pornos with their sometimes treated and filtered and layered harmonies),  The production is bright, punchy and unfussy.  Each song has just what it needs to get the melody across in the most direct way.  All in all a great record that if you haven’t heard yet, well, you are in for a treat.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow-Ho!

Song of the Day:
Homer and Jethro – Over the Rainbow

Country Comedy Duo Homer and Jethro submit their sprightly, slightly silly but, insanely catchy version of the classic Over the Rainbow as our Song of the Day.  Their uptempo version (which as near as we can tell was recorded in 1947) features goofy asides, fine harmonies and, a sweet mandolin solo.  Enjoy.
