Distractions

Infinite Jones here.

We live in a sick sad world, no doubt about it.  How do we get through the days when there is no meaning?  Religion provides no answers except, “Faith” which means you have to believe in something you can’t prove or understand. Science has provided many answers and created just as many new questions but, doesn’t answer Why? Philosophy has so far come up with nothing more than “I think, therefore I am”.  OK, so we am but, Why am we?  We at Infinite Jones do not know the Answers.  We don’t know where you go when you die.  We cannot fix our broken political system.  We are not technologically savvy enough to invent a way to stop Climate Change.  We do suppose we can add one more Self Evident statement to Emmanuel Kant’s above.  Howabout:  I Sing, therefore I am… happy?  Music is itself self evident.  Humans across culture and history have instinctively grasped Music.  There is an internal logic to it that everyone gets and maybe its mere existence out there in the universe(s) and in the shared human consciousness is reason for hope.  Maybe.  Anyway, at Infinite Jones, Music is our thing and, we pledge to provide some Musical Distractions* to help you through the day.   It’s not much but, it ain’t nothing.   So, enjoy some nice tunes to whistle while staring into the Abyss.

You are welcome.  And, Now this:

*Oh, and Comedy – laughter is good, too.  And, the occasional nice picture to look at and whatnot.

RIP Tom Rapp

Tom Rapp founder of ’60’s Psychedelic Folk band Peals Before Swine passed away recently at age 70.   We at Infinite Jones always found his voice a bit of an un-acquired taste but, his ambitious, baroque take on Folk Pop was very influential.  He quit music in the early seventies to become an esteemed Civil Rights lawyer.  (see more here)

ValUNtines Playlist

There are too many “Valentines” song for just one Song Of the Valentines Day so, of course, we made a Playlist.  Enjoy.

Paul Westerberg – Black Eyed Susan

Song of the Day

From Paul Westerberg’s 1993 Solo debut, 14 Songs, this beautiful little charmer is really just a demo.  Paul reportedly could not remember the tuning he used  when it came time to re-record the song for the album so, he just let it go as is.  The lo-fi looseness adds to the song’s intimate appeal.  Enjoy.

This is a Weird One

Song of the Day:

Stark Reality – All You Need to Make Music

From the 1970 album NOW.  Like we said this is a weird one.  The album started as a project initiated by Hoagy Carmichael’s son to introduce children to his father’s music (see more here).  All You Need to Make Music is not by Hoagy but, rather by band leader Monty Stark featuring his distorted vibraphone and some very strange harmonies.  A fascinating artifact that must have mystified any children who might have heard it and will probably NOT be to everyone’s liking.  Dig it if you can.

All-time Favorite Album of All-Time #1

Party Down by Little Beaver

Party Down by Little Beaver is not a better album than Abbey Road.  It is not greater than Born to Run or Who’s Next or Exile on Main Street.  It is not as important as Blonde on Blonde or as beautiful and sophisticated as Innervisions.  It’s not… well, you get our point.  Party Down is not a deep, meaningful record.  Mr. Beaver is concerned with only one thing:  Partying.  He is happy when he is partying and not so much, when he is not. He can wax somewhat philosophical on the subject of Partying but, mostly he focuses on the groove.  And, that sublime groove and LB’s smooth guitar playing is what makes Party Down one of our All-Time Favorite Albums of ALL-TIME!   It’s only about 30 minutes long so there is little filler (or, to look at it another way it’s ALL filler and all the filler is great!) Strangely enough, it is not an album that would pack the dance floors.  It is a mellow groove, actually more of a Make-Out album than a Party album. Here at Infinite Jones, that groove goes straight to our private, Special Parts.  In other words, it bypasses our brains and just makes us FEEL GOOD.  And, sometimes that is just the best thing. And, it’s something Music is especially good at.  So, kick your shoes off, grab a cocktail and your favorite loved one and and Party Down with Little Beaver.  Yeah, baby.

Bonus:

Here is a song that samples Little Beaver’s Let the Good Times Roll to fabulous effect.  Enjoy Rise Like the Sun by Definition of Sound from their 1991 album Love and Life: A Journey with the Chameleons:
