Curtis Live!

Video of the Day:
Curtis Mayfield live on The Beat Club in 1970

This morning’s Curtis Mayfield Song of the Day did inspire us – to share some more Curtis Mayfield.  Here, is he and his dynamite band’s complete Beat Club appearance from 1970.  Beat Club was a really great music TV show from Germany but, you will have to excuse the somewhat too prominent German subtitles and the slightly intrusive interview parts but, it is still an amazing performance.  We hope you are inspired.

Power of Positive Pushing

Song of the Day:
The Impressions – Keep on Pushing

We seem to be feeling aspirational this week at Infinite Jones so, naturally we turn to Curtis Mayfield to help us help you through the day.  This is from Curtis’ and The Impressions 1964 album Keep on Pushing and it was a Civil Rights Anthem.  It has lost none of it’s power to inspire and the world needs inspiration just as much as it ever did.  Curtis encourages us to keep positive while we keep pushin’.  We’ll try Mr. Mayfield, we’ll try.

Just Another Other Day

Video of the Day:
Brian Eno – Just Another Day

We love Brian Eno and also Time Lapse photography so this was a natural choice to continue the Another Day theme we seem to be having today.  Enjoy.

Another Tricky Day, eh?

Song of the Day:
The WHO – Another Tricky Day

“This is no social crisis, just another tricky day for you, Fella!”  Sometimes when we are feeling a bit sorry for ourselves we think of this advice from Pete Townshend and it helps, a little.  It’s one of a handful of actually pretty good songs from no ones favorite Who album, Face Dances (1981).  So, we offer it up today to you, dear imaginary reader, and hope it helps, a little.  Cheers.

REO Rules!

Song of the Day:
REO Speedwagon – Keep Pushin’

We know this song is kinda corny but, we also know it’s Monday and you may need some encouragement to get through the day.  Besides, this is from before REO Speedwagon became an MOR Power Ballad factory, back when they were a Real Rock Band.   And, also, it’s actually a pretty fine song. with a great guitar riff.  It’s from their sixth album, simply entitled R.E.O. (1976). It was their last album before their studio breakthrough, You Can Tune a Piano but You Can’t Tuna Fish and it sometimes gets lost in the shuffle although this song was a minor hit.  So, Crank this Up and Keep Pushin’!  Happy Monday.

Tryin’ to Get to Heaven That Way

Song of the Day:
Al Green – Loving You

Al Green tries to get to Heaven through music, just like we do.  The “You” he is loving, though, is Jesus.  This song is about as religious a we get here at Infinite Jones but, hell, if this transcendentally beautiful song doesn’t make you believe that there is something greater than yourself, well we just don’t know…

Anyway, have a lovely Sunday morning.

One More Fish to Fry

Video of the Day:
Louis Jordan – Saturday Night Fish Fry

After Friday’s Fish Fry Jam, we just couldn’t resist one more.  This is Louis Jordan doing one of his signature songs Saturday Night Fish Fry on TV  in 1966.  Chuck Berry considered Louis Jordan his biggest influence and you can hear why on this “rockin'” song originally recorded in 1949!.  While Louis was  “scufflin’ and shufflin'”, Chuck was “reelin’ and rockin'” but, both were at it til the break of dawn!  As a bonus, we’ll include the superior orignial 1949 version:

Happy Saturday!

Best. Version. Ever.

Song of the Day:
Brave Combo – Fascination/In-a-Gadda-Da-vida

The Brave Combo may be known as a sort of New Wave Polka band but, they really were not limited to Polkas, rather they experimented with many types of world musc, Tangos, Cha-Chas, Mambos – stuff like that.  Their version of the old Iron Butterfly classic which cleverly segues from from the traditional waltz, Fascination into the In-A-Gadda da intro is none of that but, rather Punk with accordions.  It features a frenzied tempo and a blistering guitar “solo”.  Even the drum solo is awesome (read: concise)!  In short, it is pretty great, making it our favorite version of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida!  Enjoy.

Bonus:

David Van Tieghem – In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida (Black Light Mix)

Another unusual version, from percussionist David Van Tieghem is beat heavy and very Eighties.  Great if you like the type.  And we do.

Gimme What I Want, Gimme What I Need!

Song of the Friday:
Kelis – Friday Fish Fry

This is a recent discovery here at Infinite Jones and we are glad to have found a new Funky Friday Classic.  A quick perusal of the lyrics doesn’t really tell us why this song is called Friday Fish Fry but, who cares, when it is this funky, it is a Friday Song.  It is from her most recent album Food (2014) so maybe it makes sense in the context of some culinary concept.  All we know is it is a Jammer!  Happy Friday, ya’ll!
