You will probably recognize this guy even if you are not sure from where. He appeared in many television and movie roles, quite often as a Biker. What we at Infinite Jones were surprised to find out was that he had a previous career as a drummer in the ’60’s. He was a member of Kenny Roger’s First Edition and, most incredibly, he was behind the kit for Bob Dylan at the famous “Judas” concert where hardcore Folkys called out Dylan for going electric! Jones was 76. Read more at the AVClub.
We here at Infinite Jones are BIG Charles Mingus fans. This is from his 1957 album East Coasting. West Coast Ghost moves deftly from soothing to exhilarating and is a great example of how Mingus allows his players freedom to improvise within a composition. Enjoy.
This Rocking Rave-up is from Green‘s 1987 Elaine Mackenzie album on Chicago’s Very Own Pravda Records. A song about resisting adulthood with all your might. We at Infinite Jones can identify.
An infinite Jones continuing series highlighting Cool/unusual Cover versions
First up: TWO VERSIONS OF A SONG I DON’T REALLY LIKE! YAY!
TAKE ON Me. (Originally by A-ha.)
But, these versions are actually pretty great.
The Blanks are probably better know as Ted’s Band from the sitcom Scrubs. This version is so beautiful it almost makes me wanna give the A-ha version another chance. Almost.
And,
This wild piss take by Proto-Emo Band caP’n Jazz :
A very special fave here at Infinite Jones, Hog of the Forsaken comes from the Highly Recommended 1977 album Long Journey. Many will recognize it (or the instrumental, fiddle part) as the theme to HBO’s Deadwood. But, the charmingly weird vocals and lyrics are what really make it an unforgettable ear worm.
Michael Hurley is a quiet, unassuming oddball. He started out in the Greenwich Village Folk scene in the 1960’s and was an associate of Jesse Colin Young and the Holy Modal Rounders. He has been sporadically releasing strange and wonderful albums ever since. Especially worth checking out are the above mentioned Long Journey, 1980’s Snockgrass and, the Highly Acclaimed collaboration with the UnHoly Modal Rounders and Jeffrey Fredericks, Have Moicy!, which is one of Robert Christgau’s A+ albums (see here).
John Mahoney, veteran character actor and long time Steppenwolf member, best known for his role as as Martin Crane on Frasier, passed away yesterday. He was 77. The most surprising fact about Mahoney, who seemed the quintessential American? He was born in Blackpool, England and didn’t immigrate to the USA until he was 19. See more at the AVClub, here.
Who is Leon “Ndugu” Chancler you say (no doubt badly mispronouncing his name)? Well you may not have heard of him but, you definitely have heard him. He was the drummer on Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean, among countless others. He passed away Saturday. See Rolling Stone for further details.
