Song of the Day:

Hog of the Forsaken by Michael Hurley

A very special fave here at Infinite Jones, Hog of the Forsaken comes from the Highly Recommended 1977 album Long Journey.  Many will recognize it (or the instrumental, fiddle part)  as the theme to HBO’s Deadwood.  But, the charmingly weird vocals and lyrics are what really make it an unforgettable ear worm.

Michael Hurley is a quiet, unassuming oddball.  He started out in the Greenwich Village Folk scene in the 1960’s and was an associate of Jesse Colin Young and the Holy Modal Rounders.  He has been sporadically releasing strange and wonderful  albums ever since.  Especially worth checking out are the above mentioned Long Journey, 1980’s Snockgrass and, the Highly Acclaimed collaboration with the UnHoly Modal Rounders and Jeffrey Fredericks, Have Moicy!, which is one of Robert Christgau’s A+ albums (see here).
