Searching for What Is Gone

Song of the Day:
Electric Light Orchestra – Nightrider

We know ELO were probably never cool.  Even before they damaged their reputation with the machine-tooled Disco/Pop of their commercial hey-day, they were just not hip.  But, we don’t care because we love them anyway. (We definitely prefer the pre-disco days though.)   So, today, we are presenting for the listening pleasure of our discerning Imaginary Readers a hidden gem in the Jeff Lynne catalogue.  Nightrider is the secret weapon of their pretty fantastic 1975 Face the Music album.  It’s dark and mysterious and of course, as it’s a Jeff Lynne song, catchy as hell.  Can you be cool enough to dig it?  We knew that you could.

Hooray 4 Bollywood Again!

Video of the Day:
R. D. Burman – Duniya Mein Logo Ko from Apna Desh, 1972

As our regular Imaginary Readers, know we at Infinite Jones Love Bollywood.  As usual, we have no idea what the heck is going on here and, know next to nothing about this clip except that the music is by the legendary R. D. Burman and we love it.  But, that is good enough for us.  The color, the spectacle, the energy and the pure joy of the music carry this over the top.  We hope you relish it as we do!

Mad Improv Skillz

Song of the Day:
Tronzo and Gabrels – Not Gonna Happen

From Dave Tronzo’s Bandcamp site: “All the music on this albums was composed spontaneously as it was being recorded. This was the first meeting between Reeves and Tronzo.”  We don’t know about you but, that makes the stunning precision and almost telepathic interplay of this song seem all the more amazing.  The rest of the album, A Night in Amnesia (1995), is also fantastic.  Reeves Gabrels, best known for his work with David Bowie and Tin Machine and slide guitarist David Tronzo only recorded this one album together but, it’s a shame, as it is a doozy.  Too bad it is not more widely known but, today we do our very small part to correct that oversight.  Enjoy.

Funky Space

Song of the Day:
Marvin Gaye – A Funky Space Reincarnation

Today Infinite Jones takes you “over to the Pluto-tarium to get Pluto-tized.  We know ya’ll can dig that.”  A Funky Space Reincarnation is the lightest song from this otherwise dark, and personal Divorce Album, Here, My Dear.  It’s relaxed,  irresistibly groovy beat and weird, hilarious lyrics make it one of our favorite Marvin Gaye songs, which is saying a lot because we love us some Marvin.  Hope you do to.

All-Time Favorite Albums of All-Time #2

Guitar Paradise of East Africa – Various Artists

It has come to our attention that this delightful album of ringing guitars and joyous, bouncing rhythms has become difficult to obtain.  This must be corrected.  It is too wonderful to not be heard and so we present it here for your intense listening pleasure. It is a great gateway album to the broad world of African Music and even if you think you don’t like African Music this album may change your mind.  Full of soaring melodies and crystalline guitar lines it is irresistible to almost all music lovers.  Give it a listen and be transported to paradise.

Shoot Out Delights

Song of the Day:
Richard and Linda Thompson – Shoot Out the Lights

Shoot Out the Lights from Richard and Linda Thompson’s classic 1982 album of the same name is our Song of the Day today because, well, ya just gotta hear this one!  If you are at all a fan of the guitar as an instrument played in a Rock and/or Roll context and you have not heard this, seriously, hold on to something when you listen because you are in for a treat.   Enjoy.
